Berdych secures shock victory against Roger Federer in the Wimbledon quarterfinals
Tomas Berdych has made it through to the semi finals at Wimbledon, which now sets him up for his second consecutive Grand Slam semi final appearance. Berdych has become the first Czech in the men’s game to reach the Wimbledon semi finals since Ivan Lendl in 1990, and is beginning to prove that he can deal with the mental stress of the latter stages of Grand Slams.
The real news here, however, is that Roger Federer, top seed and six-time champion, has crashed out. Federer wasn’t at his best, but did not play poorly today, and full credit must go to Berdych. The match ended in four sets, with the scores at 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Federer could convincingly be described as one of the favourites to win this year, despite his nervy first match against Alejandro Falla. This result has blown things wide open, and though Rafael Nadal now stands out as a favourite, the Spaniard has a very tough match against Robin Soderling ahead of him today.
Today’s result echoed the shocks provided in the women’s draw, where Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams were eliminated against the odds yesterday. Perhaps we’re in for even more surprises here. Berdych’s victory should do his world ranking a significant boost, though he can’t rest up just yet. He faces a challenging match against Novak Djokovic in the semi finals, and both players will be thinking that this year’s draw presents them with the best opportunity of their careers to go on and lift the Wimbledon title.
