Tomas Berdych has begun his Paris Masters campaign in style, with a forty-seven minute victory over French wildcard Florent SerraTomas Berdych made light work of his second round tie against Florent Serra, defeating the Frenchman in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Berdych might not have been up against one of the tournament favourites here, but he’s clearly signalled his intentions, and few opponents will want to face him.
Berdych is currently in a strong position to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals at the end of the month, but can’t afford any slip-ups just yet. Berdych has had his best season to date as far as rankings are concerned, and this will be his first appearance in the finals should he qualify. The Czech star is currently the highest ranked of the qualification contenders, and he may be able qualify by virtue of another challenger being eliminated early.
Gael Monfils also played today, and won in straight sets against Benjamin Becker of Germany. Monfils is the only seeded Frenchman here, and is aiming to do his country proud in Paris. Despite a gutsy performance from Becker on Court Central, Monfils managed to clinch a 7-6, 6-4 victory.
