Bartoli had been looking to win the title here, and she’ll be disappointed to have lost in this manner. She’d won all four of her previous hard court meetings against Medina Garrigues prior to this clash.
Medina Garrigues could easily have lost the match, but her success in the second set tie-breaker proved to be crucial to her 4-6, 7-6(7), 1-0 success. Speaking after the match, Bartoli revealed, "On one of Anabel's drop shots in the second set breaker, I felt like my ankle got blocked and my whole body went forward on it.”
"It hurt a few seconds after,” continued the world No. 9. “When I got to match point I struggled to put any weight on it, then I double faulted, and everything fell apart from there. But even if I won match point I don't think I would have been able to play tomorrow."
Medina Garrigues will now face Sabine Lisicki in Saturday’s semi-finals.
