Roger Federer was supreme as Andy Murray’s dreams of a first grand slam were crushed in the Australian Open final.

Federer made it sixteen grand slam titles and a fourth Australian Open crown. His form in the latter stages of this tournament has made a mockery of the suggestions after the US Open final that Federer’s slam winning days may be over.

Federer was simply unstoppable in the first two sets. Both players had some sublime moments but Federer was able to turn on the magic a little more consistently, finding some ridiculous angles. Murray has generally returned the Federer serve well in the past but in both their grand slam final matches, Federer has moved it up to another level. Often following his serve into the net, the Swiss gave Murray few chances to break until the third set.

At 6-3, 6-4 to Federer, the match looked dead but Murray gave his fans brief hope of an unlikely comeback when he raced to a 5-2 third set lead. However those thoughts were short-lived as a sloppy Murray service game allowed Federer to break back and force a tiebreak.

Murray still had his chances and was devastated to miss five set points in the breaker but Federer proved the cooler in a 24 point epic to claim a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(11) win.

Murray struggled to contain his emotions in a tearful presentation speech, apologising his many supporters. “Hopefully one time I can come back and win here. "I got great support back home - sorry I couldn't do it for you tonight," he said.
