Juan Martin Del Potro and Justine Henin will both descend in the rankings when the January 31st updates come around.
Juan Martin Del Potro and Justine Henin both under-achieved at the 2011 Australian Open compared to the results that they turned in at last year's draw.
Del Potro, a player who made the 4th round last season in Melbourne, only made the second round this season and since he's already ranked so low at 236th, the difference in ranking points will be substantial. Del Potro is looking at dipping down to near 500th spot as he will only have 65 ranking points when the January 31st rankings come around.
Del Potro missed tons of action in 2010 with his wrist injury, surgery, and recovery time and it does not look like the problem is solved. Against Marcos Baghdatis in the second round, Del Potro had trouble hanging onto his racket and it cost him break point on his serve - a clear indication that he's not fully recovered.
Justine Henin, last year's finalist from Melbourne, was a Day 5 casualty at the hands of Svetlana Kuznetsova. The Russian's win over Henin was just the third time she'd beaten the Belgian in 19 career matches.
With the loss Henin's inabilities at this point in her career have been exposed and that will be clear in the rankings, once they are updated following the 2011 Australian Open.
Henin earned 1400 ranking points at last season's Melbourne Park Grand Slam but she'll take away just 160 this season. That will see her suffer a net loss 1240 ranking points and that should push her out to about 30th by month's end.
