Rafael Nadal begins the defence of his Australian Open crown in Monday’s night session.

Nadal has not won a title since last May and with that and a recent poor record against the top ten, not many are predicting Nadal to defend his title here. However the world number two should not be written off so soon. In the Qatar Open, Nadal showcased a new more adventurous gamestyle, playing closer to the baseline and looking to dictate play. It was those tactics which won him Wimbledon and an Olympic gold medal in 2008 so 2010 could see the resurgence of Nadal as a slam winner once more.

Peter Luczak should provide a decent opening test. The big serving Aussie will bring his game to Nadal, he likes to be very aggressive and get into the net as much as possible.

Luczak has had a good start to the season. He caused Andy Roddick a few problems in Brisbane and then made the Sydney quarters, beating Tomas Berdych along the way.

However Nadal loves a target so don’t expect Luczak’s serve-volleying tactics to have too much success.
