Kim Clijsters faced a tricky opponent on Saturday but she survived and is through to the 4th round.
Kim Clijsters is into the 4th round of the 2011 Australian Open as she defeated a feisty French player in Alize Cornet. After winning a close tiebreaker in the first round Clijsters completed the straight sets victory 7-6, 6-3 and she will now face Ekaterina Makarova in the middle round.
The 2011 Australian Open marks just the first time that Makarova has made the 4th round of any Grand Slam and while the experience should help her grow into a better player for the future, Clijsters is the woman of the moment.
In other action Australian Samantha Stosur saw her campaign come to an end as rising Czech star Petra Kvitova defeated Stosur in straight sets. Kvitova now looks good to make the quarters as she faces Italian Flavia Pennetta in the next round.
There is a quarterfinal clash brewing between Kvitova and Vera Zvonareva brewing although that match is not set yet. Both of those players are in the same semi as Clijsters and great tennis match-ups appear to be on the very near horizon.
