Andy Roddick faces a stiff test in his bid to make a fifth Australian Open semi-final.

Cilic has had a gruelling route to the quarter-finals and the big question will be whether he has enough energy left in the tank to beat Roddick. This is the furthest he has ever been in a grand slam, equalling his showing at the US Open last year while Roddick is a serial semi-finalist and finalist at grand slams, always in there at the business end of the second week.

Cilic nearly crashed out in the second round, recovering from two sets to one down to beat the hugely talented teenager Bernard Tomic in five sets. That was not a particularly auspicious performance but Cilic raised his game to defeat the dangerous Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets and then oust Juan Martin Del Potro 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in a four hour classic in which Cilic smashed 71 winners.

Roddick had progressed fairly smoothly through the rounds until he ran into Fernando Gonzalez on Sunday. In an entertaining heavy hitting battle, Roddick took Gonzalez’s brilliant best for the best part of four sets before outlasting the Chilean 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.   

Roddick and Cilic have only played twice before, both have been tight matches decided by a few points. Roddick won 6-4, 7-6 at Queens in 2007 and Cilic gained revenge 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the Canadian Masters a year later.
