Cilic has stayed in the top 20 with bad form for quite some time now but his moment of truth is nearing.
Marin Cilic, is a former top 10 player and about a year ago he was looking like a top 4 player. However in recent months he has been going through some growing pains as the 22 year old Croatian has been on bad form since August 2010.
Cilic will contest the 2011 Australian Open next week and unless he duplicates his result from last season, he stands to take a pretty big hit in the ATP rankings.
In 2010 Cilic made the Australian Open semifinals, through Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Roddick, and as a result he earned 720 ranking points. Cilic played well for a time after the 2010 Aussie but during the second of 2010 he started slumping.
This year Cilic opened his 2011 season in Chennai, a tournament that he won last season, and in his first match he fell to Japan's Kei Nishikori, a player who looks like he could make a push to the top 40 this year.
If Cilic doesn't right the ship soon, he's likely to fall in the first week of the Australian Open and that would see his ranking slide significantly. Currently Cilic is ranked 15th on tour and with an early round exit he would likely drop down to somewhere between 23rd and 28th.
