Andy Murray, however, is one of our staff writer's recommendations.

Rafael Nadal has won the Australian Open before and based on the Spaniard's recent tear through the most recent 3 Grand Slams many are confident that the world number 1 will win Melbourne this January.  However with Andy Murray taking down another hard court Masters title you do have to wonder if the Scot will finally ascend to the top spot in a Grand Slam.

Here are the betting odds for the top 5 favorites for the event which will not begin until January:

  1. Rafael Nadal +200 (2/1) Boylesports
  2. Roger Federer +350 (7/2) BetFred
  3. Andy Murray +600 (6/1) SkyBet
  4. Novak Djokovic +800 (8/1) Boylesports
  5. Juan Martin Del Potro +1400 (14/1) SkyBet

Del Potro, as a 5th favorite in this market, is more of a reference to his potential than it is to his actual recent form.  Del Potro has no wins since returning from his wrist injury and while it is a fact that he is a massive talent, the 2009 US Open is ages ago for this player.

Before you take the Argentinian at odds of +1400 some positive results need to be seen.

2011 may be the year that Andy Murray comes of age on the ATP Tour.  The clay courts and grass courts will likely be dominated by Rafael Nadal once again but Murray's third round blip at the 2010 US Open can't be expected again in Melbourne.  Priced at 6 to 1, the Scot definitely looks like a better pick than Nadal at +200 as, even with the US Open title, you would probably want odds more like +400 on Rafa to justify the risk.
