22 year old Aussie had an easy time in first round of qualifying.

Matthew Ebden's goal of playing in his first Australian Open for singles is still alive.  Ebden defeated Spain's Carlos-Poch Gradin in the first round of qualifying in Melbourne.

The final score was 6-2, 6-1 and Edben now meets Adrian Menendez-Maceiras, in what looks like a coin toss.

Ebden is ranked 250th in the world but that is his career high ranking and he appears to be mid-surge.  Ebden has never played in a singles draw for a Grand Slam yet as last year's showing was a doubles accomplishment.
