Roddick has been in the semi-finals three times at Indian Wells but he has never been able to break through and reach that elusive final. Rafael Nadal has been a permanent obstacle in recent years, taking Roddick out twice at that stage.
Last year Roddick went into their semi-final with a lot of confidence having just beaten Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-2 but went down 7-6, 6-4 again to Nadal.
Roddick has beaten Lu twice before both times in Memphis. The latest was a 7-6, 6-4 win in the tournament last month.
Lu is ranked 103 and had to come through qualifying before beating Oscar Hernandez to get to this stage. He had little difficulty progressing through the rounds, having been ranked quite a bit higher.
Lu reached the Johannesburg quarter-finals in February but other than that his 2010 has been poor so far with multiple first round defeats. However he is a very gritty, consistent player so although Roddick should win in straight sets it will not be easy.
