Andy Roddick is in third round action today against France's Julien Benneteau in the third round of the US Open.
Roddick put in a much improved performance to take out young gun Jack Sock in straight sets in Friday's second round as the youngster's inexperience showed on one of the biggest stadiums in the world.
However make no mistake, this is a very tough third round for Roddick as Benneteau has come into some serious form over the past few weeks. Injuries have really hit the Frenchman over the past year but he showed signs of a revival in Cincinnati where he had some chances against Rafa Nadal before putting in a superb run to make the final of Winston-Salem as a qualifier.
It was the perfect US Open preparation for Benneteau and he promptly disposed of tenth seed Nicolas Almagro 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 in round one.
"He's playing well. It's a very, very serious threat," Roddick said. "He qualified and almost won Winston Salem last week. He's rolled a couple guys here early. He's in form. I don't care what his ranking says, he's in form right now, so it's going to be tough."
Benneteau is playing some very creative tennis at the moment and this one could well go the distance. I would not be surprised if he takes this in four or five.
