Roddick overcame a slow start against the unorthodox wildcard Tatsuma Ito to book a second round place with a 6-4, 6-3 win earlier this week. Roddick revealed that since his ill-fated US Open campaign he has been hitting the gym after a bout of mono decimated his energy levels at the start of the summer.
“There were some good things today and some that were inconsistent," Roddick told the press. "Since New York I have been working on my fitness a lot. He played very well in the first set, he hits very hard and flat and the surface is fast, so it was a bit uncomfortable at the beginning."
Chardy is a bit of a streaky player, on a good week he can threaten anyone but those weeks have been few and far between in 2010. He ended the 2009 season ranked just outside the top 30 so it's been a bit of a disappointing year for him.
Roddick won their only previous match 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 at Wimbledon 2009 and on a fast surface it is difficult to see beyond a straight sets win for the American.
