While some of the other top seeds toiled under the fierce New York sun, Roddick made light of the conditions with an emphatic 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Stephane Robert.

Roddick who turned 28 on Monday, is desperate to add to his solitary slam title which he won seven years ago at Flushing Meadows and he's aware the clock is ticking.  “I don't think too much about age, number, whatever. I'll play till I can, until I feel like I shouldn't any more. But the urgency is always there," he said.

His title credentials this year will come under serious examination under the Arthur Ashe stadium lights now against Tipsarevic. The Serb is a renowned giantkiller and has given Roddick plenty of problems in the past. The American needed four sets to get the better of him at Wimbledon 2006 and was left flummoxed on the grass two years later when Tipsarevic abruptly ended another Wimbledon campaign in the second round.
