Top seed Andy Roddick begins his Winston-Salem campaign against lucky loser Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
Roddick's return to the tour did not go quite as planned last week as the American lost an ill-tempered clash with Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in Cincinnati. Roddick was incensed at being docked a point for striking a ball into the crowd which gifted Kohlschreiber a break early in the deciding set and lost his way.
He will be hoping for better fortunes in Winston-Salem, a familiar venue at which he's practised many times. He begins against France's Roger-Vasselin who was originally knocked out in the final qualifying round by Julien Benneteau before getting a lucky loser place into the draw.
He made the most of his good fortune, defeating Croatia's Lukas Rosol 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 but he is not expected to trouble Roddick. The Frenchman is ranked 113 and mainly competes on the challenger circuit.
Prediction: Roddick in straight sets
