Andy Roddick has suffered an injury blow after an abdominal injury forced him to pull out of the Legg Mason Classic.
Roddick last won the Washington title back in 2007 and is a regular visitor to D.C. but he has suffered a strained abdominal muscle in training.
The 28 year old has become progressively more injury prone in recent years as the strain of his high intensity game takes its toll on his body. This time last year he missed a chunk of the American hard court swing after a bout of mono and he skipped the French Open in May after a shoulder injury (though it’s doubtful Roddick was too distraught about that).
There’s a number of top players battling injury at the moment with David Ferrer facing a race against time to make the US Open having suffered a hairline wrist fracture after a fall in training.
Ferrer cracked a bone in his left hand, meaning he is unable to strike his potent double-handed backhand. He is definitely out of next week’s Canadian Masters and will almost certainly miss Cincinnati the following week.
