Andy Murray is a former Cincinnati champion and he begins against Jeremy Chardy in round two today.

Murray silenced his doubters with a brilliant sequence of performances in Toronto last week. Unconvincing early on, the world number four stepped up a gear from the quarter-final stage, seeing off David Nalbandian, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer all in straight sets, with a brand of attacking tennis we have never seen before from Murray.

This is a tricky first match for him as Chardy made the quarters in Toronto. The big hitting Frenchman has been as high as 31 in the world and he saw off Marcos Baghdatis, Fernando Verdasco and Nikolay Davydenko during his highly impressive run in Canada.

Murray will have to start strongly but the odds are firmly in his favour particularly as Cincinnati is one of his favourite tournaments. He beat Federer for the first time here while still a teenager back in 2006 and won the title in 2008.

He has played Chardy once before, winning 6-4, 6-2 on the way to his first Rogers Cup title in 2009.
