Murray did not look particularly comfortable in the Cincinnati conditions against Jeremy Chardy yesterday dropping serve multiple times during a bizarre second set. Murray looked to be completely in command against his powerful but erratic opponent but proved completely incapable of closing out the match in straight sets, eventually collecting himself to win 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.
Gulbis had a shaky start to the hard court season but his form took a turn for the better in Toronto last week where he put up a good fight before losing in three sets to Robin Soderling. He reached the third round here with a hard-fought 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win over 13th seed Jurgen Melzer, coming back from 4-0 down in the final set breaker to win it 7-5.
Gulbis is a player of a similar mould to Chardy, something Murray recognised when looking ahead to the match. "I'm going to have to return well, play a solid match and try and keep him moving because when he's dictating the match he plays very, very well," the Brit said.
Murray has won all four of his previous matches against Gulbis, beating the Latvian in straight sets at Wimbledon and the US Open last year. However he is wary of Gulbis' power not least because the courts here seem to be playing faster this year.
"The practice courts are absolute lightning and the match court is quick too, so very different to Toronto, but I've played well here before so maybe it just takes a little bit of time to get used to," Murray said.
