Murray spent most of last week feeling ill but he brushed that aside to defeat Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-3 in round one. Murray admitted that he was out of breath a number of times during the match but he is very keen to put in a good showing this week with Robin Soderling threatening to overtake him in the rankings.
Montanes has enjoyed a stand out season reaching a career best ranking of 24. He is regarded as a clay-court specialist but is underrated away from the dirt. He made the fourth round of the US Open and scored a decent win over Kuala Lumpur runner-up Andrey Golubev in round one here.
Murray beat Montanes comfortably three times in 2009, all in straight sets. They only played once indoors with Murray winning 6-4, 6-2 on the way to the Valencia title.
Murray should win again but expect Montanes to give him a much tougher battle.
