Murray enjoyed the best season of his career in 2011, becoming only the sixth man in tennis history to reach the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams in the same year but that first major title continues to elude him. He came closest down under, losing to Novak Djokovic in the Aussie Open final while Rafael Nadal thwarted him in the last four of the other three slams.

Lendl will bring vast amount of experience to the table. He reached 19 Grand Slam finals in his career and won the US Open three years in a row. At his peak he was regarded as one of the toughest competitors out there and Murray will be hoping he can add some extra steel to his game when he comes up against the likes of Djokovic and Nadal at the business end of the majors.

Lendl has spent most of his retirement on the golf course and it was always going to take this kind of opportunity to draw him into coaching. He will link up with Murray at the Australian Open and work with him full-time from then onwards.

"I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Andy," Lendl said. "He is a unique talent and I look forward to trying to help him reach his goals."
