Andy Murray felt he played a poor match against Robin Soderling in Indian Wells.

Murray got his tactics wrong against Soderling and was punished. It was a fairly similar style match to Murray’s loss against Marin Cilic back at the US Open. Once again he played far too passively letting Soderling have plenty of swings at mid-court balls on his forehand and was simply hit off the court.

Afterwards Murray was very critical of his performance. “I didn't move particularly well,  I was hitting the ball really short, and he's obviously got a big game and he was able to dictate all of the points,” he said. “From my side it was poor, but he hit the ball really big from the back of the court and served well when he needed to.”

Murray had last played Soderling back in 2006 and the Swede has improved enormously since then, particularly in the past twelve months in which he’s reached a grand slam final and gate-crashed the top ten.

“He's a lot better player than he was three years ago,” Murray said. “I watched him a lot last year; he's been playing a lot better. He serves well, hits a big ball. When he's in a rhythm, he hits the ball real big off both wings, which makes it difficult.”
