Andrey Golubev became the first player from Kazakhstan to win an ATP title by triumphing in the Hamburg final on Sunday.

Golubev defeated world number fifteen Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 7-5 with an inspired display of tennis which will now take him into the world’s top 50 for the first time.

Golubev’s solid serve provided the bedrock for his success, dropping just five points on it in the first set.  

The turning point in the match came in the sixth game of the second set. Melzer finally looked to be getting into the match and had five break points but Golubev saved them all and held for 3-3. Five games later, Golubev seized his chances on the Melzer serve, breaking and and then serving out to claim victory in just under and hour and a half.
