Andrea Petkovic will battle it out on Friday for a place in the semi-finals of the China Open

Andrea Petkovic’s third round showdown against Marion Bartoli had the makings of an exciting encounter, and the fans in Beijing weren’t disappointed. Petkovic lost a close first set, but then came back to clinch a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 success. Petkovic will now be looking to close in on the final four, but the two hours and forty six minutes of tennis that she played on Thursday might hold her back.

The German’s quarter-final opponent will be world No. 16 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Pavlyuchenkova had been scheduled to face Victoria Azarenka in round three, but the Belarusian pulled out of the event due to an injury to her right foot. Pavlyuchenkova should be well rested ahead of this upcoming clash.

This will be the first competitive meeting between Petkovic and Pavlyuchenkova, and it will be intriguing to see who gets the upper hand. Petkovic has had a superb season, and could be on her way to the top ten. Pavlyuchenkova has also been successful though, and she’ll have a reasonable chance, especially if this contest goes the full distance.
