Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will get her Rogers Cup campaign underway with a first round matchup against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez


Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is the fourteenth seed in this week’s Rogers Cup, and she’ll make a start there tonight with a first round showdown against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. The 20 year-old has been performing well this season, and her 30-13 match record is evidence of this. She already has one WTA title to her name for 2011 (WTA Monterrey), and should be considered as a dark horse in this competition.

Martinez Sanchez will need to be razor sharp to trouble Pavlyuchenkova, but she’s definitely in with a chance of winning this contest. She’s also won a title this year, and is ranked comfortably within the top fifty. This has been a successful season so far for the Spaniard, and it will be interesting to see how much more she can achieve.

Pavlyuchenkova has a difficult task ahead of her, but she has the ability to emerge from this matchup unscathed. Even so, a lot depends on how well Martinez Sanchez plays, and this tie has the potential to be a real crowd-pleaser. This will be the first time that the two players will meet in WTA competition.
