Ivanovic looks back on song this summer and she powered past 21st seed Jie Zheng 6-3, 6-0 in under an hour in the second round. A run to the semi-finals in Cincinnati last month has proved to be no false dawn and Ivanovic has shone so far in New York.

She struck 22 winners to dispatch Aussie Open semi-finalist Zheng and there were no signs of the serving jitters which have plagued her in recent years.

Razzano though will be no pushover. Ranked 16 last September, she has fallen to 157 after multiples bouts of injuries and has only recently been able to play an uninterrupted sequence of tournaments. After receiving a wildcard this week she showed her mettle in the last round with a shock 7-5, 6-4 win over Marion Bartoli, a big surprise as the 13th seed came into the tournament on the back of some impressive  wins over the summer.

The head-to-head is 1-1 but both matches were very close. Razzano beating a teenage Ivanovic indoors in 2005 and the Serb getting revenge (but only just), in Sydney three years later.
