Ana Ivanovic begins her US Open campaign against Ekaterina Makarova later today.

Everyone would like to see Ivanovic over the confidence woes which have plagued her tennis for the past two years and back to the top of the game. Her 2010 has been typically inconsistent but their have been some encouraging signs. Earlier this month in Cincinnati she beat Victoria Azarenka on the way to the semi-finals before falling victim to a heel injury.

She's now over that and will be hoping to improve on her bleak showings in the slams so far this year. Second round appearances at the Aussie and French Opens are as good as it's got.

This one could go either way, Makarova is a very streaky player who stunned everyone by winning the Eastbourne title in June but has done little since. She enjoys the faster courts and played well in the Bronx last week, making the semis.

Ivanovic lost in the first round last year and her supporters will be desperately hoping she can find a way through this one.
