This is Ivanovic’s only warm-up tournament on the grass ahead of Wimbledon. The Serb made the fourth round at SW19 last year and will be hoping to do better than a disappointing French Open where she crashed out in the second round.
She started reasonably strongly, defeating Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Petkovic also had a convincing win, defeating Petra Kvitova 6-3, 7-6/
The German is the world number 36 but does not have a huge amount of grass court pedigree. She lost in Wimbledon qualifying last year and went out at the first hurdle in Birmingham last week, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Anna Chakvetadze.
The two have played once before, Ivanovic winning in straight sets on hard courts four years ago.
Ivanovic is the better grass court player and our prediction is for her to secure the upset in straight sets.
