Andy Roddick admitted he did not have much left for Rafael Nadal after his one-sided quarter-final defeat at the US Open.
Roddick missed most of the summer with a torn oblique muscle and he admitted that his lack of fitness had caught up with him. It was a fantastic effort from the American to see off fifth seed David Ferrer on Thursday but if that match had gone the distance he would have been in trouble.
“I felt horrible at the end of that match,” Roddick said. “I don't know what would have happened it we would have gone five, in all honesty. But, yeah, I think it's just cumulative from whatever, just lack of preparation.”
“I think it was always going to be tough for me to play that many three out of five set matches on no training, you know, pretty much just sitting around. But I felt like I did what I could from the injury. I feel like I gave myself every opportunity, and, you know, it was enough for a good result. I don't think it was ever gonna be enough to make a push (for the title), especially with matches stacked.”
Roddick will now take a breather for a few weeks before heading to Asia for the tournaments in Bangkok and Tokyo.
