The talent on offer will give Albert Costa a headache on which four to select for the final.

It’s a rarefied position to be in and Costa knows it. With the likes of Nadal, Verdasco and Ferrer to call upon and former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero not even sure of a place in the side, Costa has enough players to field two world-beating Davis Cup teams. Carlos Moya was not even considered for the semi-final against Israel.

"The decision will be very tough," said former French Open winner Costa. "I have six, seven, eight players that could make the team. But they understand that I can only choose four.”

It’s no surprise that Spain have been the dominant side of the past decade in Davis Cup, reaching the final five times and winning three of those (2000, 2004 and 2009).

After missing out with injury last year, Nadal will be desperate to play in the final this time. He was a precocious teenager and relatively unknown when he won the Davis Cup for the first time in 2004, handing Andy Roddick a clay-court lesson.

Costa recalled that Spain’s triumph over Australia back in 2000 was a watershed for the way the Spanish approached the Davis Cup. "Before our victory in Barcelona we had a different mentality and found it hard to play Davis Cup, but it has changed radically since then," he said. "Now every time we play for Spain we seem to reach a higher level.”

Spain have home advantage against the Czech Republic which makes them big favourites but Costa is not sure on whether to go with clay as the surface. Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych both play extremely well on the dirt so a variety of courts are being considered, with an indoor venue in  Madrid another option.

Spain are 1/7 to win the final with Paddy Power.

Czech Republic are 11/2 with Sky Bet.
