Michael Berrer is competing in his first ATP semi-final against Philipp Petzschner.
Berrer won a challenger title last week and he has continued that form into Zagreb. He’s had an excellent run defeating Janko Tipsarevic 7-6, 6-3 in the first round and then brushing aside the challenge of fourth seed Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-3 in the quarters.
He plays his equally unheralded compatriot Philipp Petzschner, a man who’s serve-volley game is tailor made for indoor tournaments. He has had to go the distance in each of his matches so far, with in particular an epic win over eighth seed Ben Becker 1-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(6).
Petzschner is more experienced at this level having won the Vienna title back in 2008. However Berrer’s serve has been increasingly effective all week and he looks like the form player.
