Marin Cilic faces Jurgen Melzer for a place in the final of the Zagreb indoors.

Cilic did well to come through an awkward quarter-final on Friday against Ivo Karlovic in a battle of the giants. He managed in the end to progress 7-6, 6-4 but it was a stark contrast to the little opposition he faced in the first two rounds.

Melzer has lived up to his third seed billing by reaching this stage but he had a lot of trouble against Illya Marchenko, before grinding out a scrappy 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 win.

Cilic is in the form of his life having won Chennai at the start of the year and then made the Australian Open semi-finals. He leads 3-1 in the head-to-head over Melzer with three wins in 2008 at the Australian Open, Queens and New Haven. However the Austrian won their last match in the final of Vienna in the autumn.

Melzer will have to improve a lot on his erratic quarter-final display to even have a chance. Cilic is playing with so much confidence right now and really finding the spots with his groundstrokes.
