Marin Cilic hopes to defend his title in front of home fans.
Cilic is in the form of his life having just made the semi-finals of the Australian Open defeating Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Roddick before falling to Andy Murray in four sets.
Last year Cilic swept to this title without dropping a set and he looks odds on to do so again. His serving was immense in Australia. The main obstacle for Cilic could be overcoming the jetlag after the long flight back to Europe and adjusting to indoor courts after just a few days.
He has been helped by a Wednesday start but it is still an awkward transition.
Jan Hajek should not pose too much of a challenge. He spent most of 2009 on the challenger circuit before breaking the top 100 at the end of the year and is now ranked 81. He’s won matches in Chennai and Melbourne this year but got crushed fairly comprehensively in round two each time.
