Both players finished fairly awkward first round matches on Sunday in confident style. Murray’s extra consistency saw him overcome the power of Del Potro in the end while Federer was at his flowing best in the final set against Verdasco, playing with all the finesse he had so conspicuously lacked for most of the match.
Murray took out Federer at this stage last year sending the four time Masters Cup champion home in the round robin stages, an indignity the Swiss has not forgotten.
"I remember I was not going into the match with, let's say, the highest of hopes," he recollected. “I was injured two, three weeks before the event so I kind of just said to myself, 'You know what, I'll play aggressive and see what happens.' I was playing incredible for a set, almost got a victory, but I thought it was a very exciting match to be a part of. It was unfortunate for me not to come through but I still think the match was great. I hope we can live up to the expectations and play another good one."
Murray has been something of a thorn in Federer’s side for the past year and a half, consistently beating him in big tournaments. Consecutive wins in Abu Dhabi, Doha and Indian Wells earlier this year exemplified the hold the Scot seemed to have. However Federer re-addressed the balance quite convincingly in Cincinnati in the summer in straight sets. The pair have not played since so it will be interesting to see how much extra confidence Federer has against Murray after that win.
Murray still looks to be feeling his way back to his best form so this is an excellent chance for Federer to score another important psychological victory. The court surface will favour the Scot though, it is quite hard to hit through a player as quick as Murray on this medium paced, bouncy surface so Federer will need to serve well/
The bookies generally feel this one could go either way with Boylesports pricing both players at 9/10. Federer looks to be the one to place your money with though.
