Nikolay Davydenko holds his destiny in his hands when he faces Robin Soderling on Friday.

If Davydenko beats the Swede then he will be through to the semi-finals for a second successive year. It would send defending champion and pre-tournament favourite Novak Djokovic out which would be quite an upset.

So far Soderling and Davydenko probably deserve to go through the most. Davydenko lost a tight three setter with Djokovic on Monday but bounced back to send Rafael Nadal out of the tournament in a thrilling match on Wednesday.

Davydenko won 6-1, 7-6 but with the crowd fiercely supporting Nadal, the tension was unbelievable at times in the second set as the Spaniard fought back from a break down several times in a desperate attempt to stay in the competition. However Davydenko hung on for a deserved win.  He’s not particularly renowned for his
shot-making but at times he ran Nadal ragged with his ability to find the lines.

A Davydenko win is by no means certain as Soderling will be determined to win the group and avoid Roger Federer in the semi-finals. Soderling leads the head-to-head 6-3 between the two and has won three out of their four matches this year.

Davydenko won in a small indoor event in Kuala Lumpur this autumn but Soderling has won all the big matches. He demolished the Russian 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in the French Open quarters and repeated it in the last sixteen of the US Open. Then just two weeks ago in Paris, with the competition for the last few ATP World Finals places coming down to the wire, Soderling secured a crucial 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win.

The bookies seem to think that Davydenko might be able to pull a crucial win out of the bag.  He’s a slender favourite at 9/10 with sporting bet while Soderling is 11/10 with bet365
