They are two unlikely finalists. Even though Del Potro is the US Open champion, few were talking about him as a contender at the start of the week after a couple of months of poor indoor form. All the talk was about Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and even Andy Murray with the home support but one by one they have fallen by the wayside.

Neither player started the week particularly auspiciously. Del Potro lost the opening match of the tournament to Andy Murray but turned things around with a scrappy win over Fernando Verdasco before turning on the style against Federer bringing back memories of that New York performance all over again. He had to fight hard against a determined Robin Soderling on Saturday night and looked down and out at a break down in the third but came back for a 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win.

Nikolay Davydenko has shown the past couple of years that he should never be counted out in this event. The Russian is at his best on hard courts and particularly indoors. He’s repeated last year’s feat of making the final but this time round it’s possibly a greater achievement as not only did he have to defeat Rafael Nadal but he ended his twelve match losing streak against all-time nemesis Roger Federer. Davydenko stunned the Swiss and the London crowd with his 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win.

All in all it’s quite hard to pick a winner. Davydenko leads 2-1 on the head-to-head, winning their last match 6-3, 6-2 in the round robin stages of last year’s tournament. However the Del Potro of 2009 is a different animal. At the start of the year he got pulverized by Federer in the Australian Open but he now looks set to herald a new era and if he wins on Sunday he will overtake Andy Murray to rise to four in the rankings.

Del Potro is a 4/6 favourite with bet365 with Davydenko at 13/10 with Boylesports.
