Blue Square has jumped the gun and is offering betting lines on the ATP World Finals.
Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Juan Martin Del Potro are three key players heading into the ATP World Finals. Not all sportsbooks have offered prices for the event but a couple have jumped the gun as the field of 8 is not even set.
Here are Blue Square's prices for Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Juan Martin Del Potro.
Federer: +200 (2/1)
Murray: +450 (9/2)
Del Potro: +600 (6/1)
The funny thing about this trio is that you don't have anything good to go by since the US Open. Federer hasn't been playing because of fatigue (or he just wants a break?), Murray hasn't been playing because of his wrist, while Del Potro has been playing but losing to pretty weak competition.
Federer is probably the best pick to make above because, unlike Murray, he has not been struggling with injuries and, unlike Del Potro, he hasn't played bad since the US Open (he just hasn't been playing).
Federer has stated that he will be in Basel, an event in his home country, so you could always watch his performance there before you commit anything to the ATP World Finals.
However favorites heading into tournaments, like Federer heading into the ATP World Finals, often have their odds shorten just prior to the event. A reason for that is that a lot of people wait until just before the tournament starts before they bet. That influx of betting leads to price adjustments.
Also, Federer has won the last three titles in Basel dating back to 2006. While Novak Djokovic will be lurking in the field, you have to think that Federer is going to turn in a quality result (at least the final), something else that might lead to his odds shortening to win the ATP World Finals.
It all suggests that now might be the best time to bet on Federer as his price, right now, might be as long as it gets.
