Jurgen Melzer will be hoping to go one better than in Hamburg at the Studena Croatia Open in Umag.

The ATP Tour clay-court swing is drawing to a close. After this week, most players will head across the Atlantic and join the US Open Summer Series as the run in to Flushing Meadows gathers momentum.

Melzer is the favourite for the Umag title after coming just short at the German Open Tennis International last week.

Nikolay Davydenko is the reigning champion but the Russian is in terrible form and has made early exits in Stuttgart and Hamburg. The top half of the draw is very weak and third seed Ivan Ljubicic will be eyeing a good run in his home event. Ljubicic has competed here eleven times since 1996 but has not reached the last four since 1999.

Juan Carlos Ferrero came runner-up last year and although the Spaniard has hardly shone over the past couple of weeks, it still takes a very good performance to beat him on this surface. He could be Melzer’s main opposition this week.

Watch out for the sixth seed Aleksandr Dolgopolov. The talented young Ukrainian is gaining a bit of a reputation with his unorthodox style and could be handful for Ferrero in the quarters.
