Both Chela and Starace caused big upsets in Friday's quarter-finals. Chela put an end to Nikolay Davydenko's chances of defending his title, crushing the Russian 6-2, 6-1 in just over an hour. It's a worrying time for Davydenko as his slump continues and he's now lost six of his seven career matches against Chela.
“I think I played the perfect match,” said Chela. “He didn’t play at his best level but you still have to do everything to beat him, and I managed to do that.”
The Argentine now has an eye on his second title of the year, having won in Houston back in April.
Ivan Ljubicic's poor recent record in Umag continued. Ljubicic was hoping to make the semi-finals for the first time since 1999 but he went down 6-4, 7-6 to Potito Starace to the disappointment of the local fans.
Chela will be the fresher of the two players for this semi-final as Starace had to play two matches on Friday after rain wiped out Thursday's play.
The two players have had plenty of battles in the past though this is the first time they have met for three years. Chela leads 3-2 on the head-to-head but Starace has won two of their three matches on clay.
It's a tough one to call but our prediction is for Chela to reach his second ATP final of the year.
