Gael Monfils is up against unseeded Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the Mercedes Cup semi-finals.

Monfils has certainly put in the hard yards so far this week, going the distance in each of his matches. On Friday he took out Germany's big hope of a home Stuttgart champion, beating Florian Mayer 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. It was not pretty and it certainly was not the flamboyant Monfils we are used to but it's his first semi-final since February and after a miserable few months he will definitely take it.

When asked about his tactics in turning the match around, Monfils replied, "I was a bit more aggressive than him, I got to his drop shots well and I played deep on his forehand - they were the keys."

Gimeno-Traver has had quite a week, ousting defending champion Jeremy Chardy in the first round then disposing of top seed Nikolay Davydenko. He's in fine form at the moment and eased past Marco Chiudinelli 6-1, 6-3 in the quarters.

Both players are aiming for their first ATP final of the year. Monfils has improved as the week has gone on but Gimeno-Traver is playing some brilliant clay-court tennis and is on a roll after earning the first top ten win of his career earlier this week. He's our prediction to make Sunday's final.
