Fifth seed Albert Montanes takes on Philipp Petzschner in the first round of the Mercedes Cup.

This will be an interesting clash as Petzschner is one of the most improved players on the tour in 2010. At Wimbledon he came desperately close to knocking out Rafael Nadal in the third round.

For a serve-volleyer, Petzschner has enjoyed a surprising amount of success on clay. He defeated French Open semi-finalist Jurgen Melzer at Monte Carlo and reached the semis in Munich, beating Tomas Berdych in three sets along the way.

This is the part of the year where Montanes is in his element and he had a fine week in Estoril, beating Roger Federer on the way to the title. At Roland Garros he pushed eventual finalist Robin Soderling to four sets in the last 32.

However Montanes is not used to faced a net-rusher on clay and given his form it is possible to see Petzschner pulling off the upset here.
