Starace has opted to stay in Europe and try to rake in the points on the clay-court challenger circuit rather than head to the States just yet. He will be a strong favourite for the title this week having just made the Umag final, beating the likes of Ivan Ljubicic and Juan Ignacio Chela.
There are a string of top 100 players in the draw with Olivier Rochus also entered as second seed. The Belgian made the Newport final at the beginning of July but is also a fine clay-court exponent.
Watch out for little known Spanish third seed Pere Riba, ranked 73 in the world. Riba has put in some good performances recently, beating Stuttgart champion Albert Montanes a couple of weeks ago.
Estoril runner-up Federico Gil will be in the mix as will Italians Simone Bolelli and Filippo Volandri, both players who have been ranked well inside the top 50 in the past.
Unseeded Dutchman Robin Haase could also feature strongly. Haase has struggled a lot with injuries recently but served notice of his huge talent at Wimbledon where he came close to beating Rafael Nadal in round two.
