Tommy Haas is competing in San Jose for the seventh time.
A decade ago, Haas posed with a 9 year old boy for a photo at San Jose, now he faces that boy on centre court in round one.
It is a dream come true for 18 year old Devin Britton who was granted a wildcard for the tournament.
Haas has played just the one tournament this year and played fairly well after some indifferent form in exhibition matches, reaching the third round before losing a four setter to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Now a veteran at 31, Haas had been considering quitting but was rejuvenated by some of his performances in the slams last year after coming close to knocking out Roger Federer at Roland Garros and then making the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
Britton has been struggling to make it through futures qualifying rounds this year so he is likely to find himself some way out of his depth against Haas though he did not discredit himself against Roger Federer in New York last September when given a wild card to the US Open.
