Robin Soderling was handed his fifth ATP tour title in Rotterdam when Mikhail Youzhny was forced to retire.

Soderling was leading 6-4, 2-0 when Youzhny retired with a hamstring injury. It was unfortunate for the Russian who had one of the best wins of his career over Novak Djokovic on Saturday.

Youzhny admitted afterwards that he first started to feel the injury during his win over Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals and it has been getting worse since.

Soderling is a deserved winner this week after a brilliant performance to defeat Nikolay Davydenko on Saturday.

The indoor season always brings out the best in him. He has reached the Rotterdam final before back in 2008 when he finished runner-up to Michael Llodra.

“It's been a very good week overall. I started out struggling a bit in my first two rounds, struggling to find my form, but I worked hard and managed to get better with every match,” Soderling said. “Obviously it's not the way I wanted to win today with Mikhail retiring injured but I am still very happy to end the week with another title.”

The European indoor season now rolls on to Marseille.
