Ferrer has been a real force on clay this year, starting 2010 strongly on the dirt in South American where he won the Acapulco title and reached another final. He has taken that onto the European circuit, making back to back semi-finals in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona and looks set to contend once again in Rome.

Ferrer made light of a testing third round against the out of form Andy Murray. Murray played a lot better than in recent matches but did not have the consistency to trouble Ferrer who wrapped up a straight sets win.

Tsonga is not as comfortable on clay but has benefitted from a kind draw this week which has seen him bypass any of the big names until this stage. He had a good win in the last round over clay-court specialist Santiago Giraldo but against Ferrer he will have to go up several levels to have a chance.

Tsonga’s power is not nearly as effective on clay so look for Ferrer to wear him down in straight sets.
