With its spectacular location and steeped in tradition this tournament is one of the most popular stops of the clay-court season. It has definitely inspired Nadal over the past few years, the Spaniard has won an incredible six titles in a row at the Monte Carlo country club, equalling the record for Masters Series titles here in 2010.

Back on his favourite surface, can Nadal halt the Novak Djokovic juggernaut ? Djokovic has taken his game to new levels this season, sweeping up all the major titles so far and he shows no signs of stopping. He's come very close to beating Nadal on clay in the past but has never quite managed it, will his extra level be enough ?

Can Robin Soderling get back on track this week ? Soderling has been strong in the smaller events this year, picking up three titles but he has not delivered in the big ones, though he was struggling with injury in Indian Wells and Miami.

Juan Martin Del Potro has gone from strength to strength in 2011 and he will be a serious dark horse at Roland Garros although it may be a little too soon to expect him to challenge for the title. It will be fascinating to see how the Argentine fares this week.    

Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych have both accepted late wildcards, adding further strength to the field. Berdych reached the French Open semi-finals in 2010 but has never enjoyed so much success in the clay-court Masters Series events.
