The autumn indoor season gets underway this week with ATP Metz.

There will be much focus this week on Richard Gasquet. The Frenchman's aim is to get back somewhere near his career high of seven in the rankings but going by his performance against Rafael Nadal in New York he still has some way to go !

He has a tricky opening round match against German qualifier Michael Berrer. Berrer hasn't won many matches on the ATP tour this year but he's the sort of player who could give a rusty Gasquet a few problems, very fast around the court and he will make Gasquet hit a lot of balls.  Gasquet has looked very out of touch on his return so far and even though Boylesports have him at odds of 4/7, Berrer looks like a good bet at 6/4 with bet365.

Another first round match-up featuring players who have seen better days is Sebastien Grosjean vs. Jarkko Nieminen. Grosjean has made the semi-finals of all of the grand slams apart from the US Open but after persistent injuries, the veteran is now ranked outside the top 1000.  He’s only played a handful of tournaments this year and required a wildcard. Jarkko Nieminen has been inside the top fifteen and reached the final of Sydney in January. However he was out for four months from April to August and has slipped down to 62.

The head-to-head between the two is 1-1 but I can only see one winner, Nieminen at 2/5 with bet365.

Never count out Arnaud Clement, the French veteran best known for making the 2001 Australian Open final. Last year few would have predicted Clement would again feature in the latter stages of a slam but he made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, coming within touching distance of the semis. However the Frenchman is on the worst losing streak of his career, eight straight matches going back to the French Open. He lost again in qualifying and required a lucky loser spot to make the main draw where he faces Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic isn’t in great form either but is worth backing at 8/15 with Betfred.

5th seed Fabrice Santoro could be in danger against Christophe Rochus this afternoon. Santoro is in his farewell year on tour and had some decent results on the grass, However he’s up against the man who beat him in four sets at the French Open. If you’re looking for an early upset, go for Rochus at 2/1 with bet365.

Metz round 1 odds:

Fabrice Santoro (4/9 with SkyBet)   vs.  Christophe Rochus (2/1 with bet 365)

Janko Tipsarevic (8/15 with Betfred)  vs.   Arnaud Clement (15/8 with sporting bet)

Jarkko Nieminen (2/5 with bet365)   vs.  Sebastien Grosjean (21/10 with expekt.com)

Richard Gasquet (4/7 with Boylesports)  vs.  Michael Berrer (6/4 with bet365)
