Andy Roddick’s defence of his Memphis title was ended by a brilliant performance from Sam Querrey.

Querrey came mightly close to defeating Roddick in San Jose last week and he made no mistake this time round in Friday’s quarter-final, taking out the top seed 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
Again Querrey served brilliantly and held his nerve once Roddick had levelled at one set, gaining a crucial early break in the third set to end Roddick’s chances.

Roddick was disappointed having felt he had actually played a better match than in San Jose, “ I felt like it was the opposite of Sam's and my match of last week (San Jose). I felt like I had the better end of the first two sets and [yet] we were even,” Roddick said. “I felt like I was hitting the ball a little better, giving myself more chances in return games. Today I played one sloppy game in the third set and that was it. Sometimes at this level there's not much in between it."

Querrey was relieved Roddick double-faulted on break point early in the third set, a moment which proved to be the turning point of the match.

"You're not going to get that too many times from Andy, but I'll take it," said Querrey. "When that rare opportunity comes… you've just got to take advantage of it. I thought I did a good job there, and just kept the momentum going and played an unbelievable third set."
