Sixth seed Janko Tipsarevic looks to get past the Los Angeles first round for the first time in his career.

Tipsarevic exited at the first hurdle the only previous time he competed at the Farmers Classic, back in 2006. Four years later he's seeded sixth and looking to kick start his US Open Summer Series campaign.

Tipsarevic played Atlanta last week but was unfortunate enough to draw the giant Kevin Anderson in the opening round. The South African was on a roll, with his huge serve firing all week and he went on to reach the semis.

He has a far kinder draw this week. Santiago Giraldo is predominantly a clay-courter who picks up most of his points in South American challengers. He did not do too well on the US hard courts earlier this year so Tipsarevic should survive for another round.
