Veteran Schuettler is a former world number five and back in 2003 he made the final of the Australian Open. At his peak Schuettler was one of the fittest and fastest players on tour and his sheer resilience enabled him to work his way to the top.

He’s currently ranked 90 and in decline. He scored a shock win over Sam Querrey at the Australian Open but since then he had not won a match before this tournament where he had to go through qualifying. He has won three matches here to reach this stage, beating Brazil’s Thiago Alves 7-5, 6-0 in round one.

Nadal leads their head-to-head 4-1 with Schuettler’s win coming back in 2004. Nadal has not dropped a set in their past four matches and it does not look like he will today.
